Biography:

Dr. Richard A. Hamer has spent more than 40 years caring for patients in Neurology and helping individuals and families better understand complex neurological conditions. His practice focuses on General Neurology with expertise in Stroke Neurology and EMG / NCV diagnostics. Throughout his career, experience has remained the foundation of his approach, while he continues to adapt to advances in the field.

Dr. Hamer’s path into medicine began in an unexpected place. He originally started his career as an electrical engineer in 1980 before being encouraged to explore medicine through the lens of Neurology. He saw an opportunity to combine problem-solving with patient care and chose a path that has shaped his life’s work.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, completed his internship at University Hospital in Birmingham, and completed his Neurology residency through Parkland Hospital and UT Southwestern Medical School. He became board-certified in General Neurology in 1995 and later earned board certification in Vascular Neurology in 2005.

One of the things Dr. Hamer values most about practicing Neurology is that the field never stands still. He continues to stay engaged with innovation and evolving developments in neurological care to remain current and relevant for his patients. He is especially passionate about teaching and believes patients have better experiences when they understand not only what is happening, but why. That commitment to education and helping patients make sense of their diagnosis has become a defining part of his practice and one of the things that patients often find most valuable about their care.

Dr. Hamer has called Longview home for more than 30 years. He and his wife have built their lives in East Texas, where their two sons, daughter-in-law, and their grandchildren also live. Having multiple generations of family rooted in the community gives Dr. Hamer a personal connection to the people he serves and reinforces his commitment to the long-term health and well-being of East Texas.
